We know as potato producers we have an important part to play in reducing our impact on the environment we all live in. Our aim is to minimise the use of energy derived from fossil fuels and other resources as far as practical and to ensure that as many materials as possible are reused or recycled.
Elgro Potatoes Ltd and its suppliers are committed to trading in an ethically robust, honest and open way. As part of our drive to maintain and improve standards all of our growers are registered with SEDEX ( Supplier Ethical Data Exchange ). Sedex is an online database which allows members to store, share and report on four key areas. These are Labour Standards, Health and Safety, The Environment and Business Practises.
Genetically Modified Foods
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is the lead government department on the use and release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s). The Environmental Protection Act 1990 is the primary legislation that controls the use of GMO’s.
Under the current legislation no Genetically Modified crops of potatoes are being grown commercially in the United Kingdom.
Elgro Potatoes Ltd does not grow or supply Genetically Modified crops as it is prohibited under current legislation.
All of our growers are LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) accredited which is a scheme designed to promote environmentally responsible farming.
